About David Phelps

David Phelps is credited among today's most notable voices and brandishes a vocal range that extends more than three octaves. His artistry has echoed off the walls of Carnegie Hall and vibrated the chandeliers in the White House and in countless halls and churches around the world. As a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, he has earned Dove Awards, Grammy Awards, and multiple platinum-selling projects. David’s many honors as a soloist include a 2009 Dove Award nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year. His 2012 live concert DVD, David Phelps: Classic, has garnered acclaim from across gospel music and beyond, and has been featured on numerous television networks, including PBS.

David’s natural gift for music was evident when he was very young. From his weekly piano lessons, to his family’s frequent rehearsals for church performances, he was consistently exposed to the audible art. While earning his degree in vocal performance from Baylor University, David was given numerous opportunities to venture into the world of mainstream music. “I had several teachers who felt that I should be singing opera or performing somewhere on Broadway,” he recalls. “In college particularly, I had a teacher who kept pushing me strongly toward classical music, but when she finally accepted that Christian music was what God was calling me to do, that became the turning point for me.”

While studying music at Baylor, David met Lori, who has been his wife and rock-solid partner in his career for more than two decades. The couple has four great kids—Callie, Maggie Beth, Grant and Coby—and their family resides in the country outside Nashville, Tennessee.
